Project 3
Using the thinking skill reasoning, I was able to apply and explain the topic of FGM. FGM is Female Genital Mutation, the process of gutting certain parts of the external vagina. I gained inspiration for this project after I watched a documentary on how many countries in Africa still practice this even though there is no scientific evidence that concluded that it is safe. I created three products for my project, including a clay piece.
Art
For art, I created a clay piece. As you see below, it it a flower, which represents the vagina. If you look closer, you can see the design of mini razor blades hidden in the petals. There is blood on the inside of the flower. This represents the process of FGM. FGM is done with some sort of sharp object, anything from razor blades to knives, to cut off the external vagina area. It is usually done for societal reasons, such as staying "pure" until you are married. It comes with the idea that women have to be "marriageable" in order to be accepted in this society. I created this piece by cutting a slab of clay and building onto it with petals and elements I created. I chose the blue color scheme because the color blue represents trust, which is broken between families when they force their daughters to undergo this procedure. I sue the thinking skill reasoning for this piece because I am able to provide a why behind FGM. I reveal how the process is done and why it is done through this art piece.
English
For English, I created an argumentative essay to prove my point that FGM is damaging to women, specifically in Somalia, where 90% of women have undergone this. I argued that it affects both physical and emotional aspects of human health. I also brought up the point that there is no scientific proof to keep a women a virgin or healthy, as many Somalians believe. You can see my article below. I use reasoning because I explained the reasons why FGM is done in Somalia. I addressed the beliefs they had and the view on women in their society.
History
For history, I created a mind map. The mind map explains different things about FGM. It represents my ideas and thoughts about FGM. It connects similar topics to one another. It explains my thought process and the historical and social aspects behind these subjects. It uses reasoning because it connects different ideas together that explain why FGM is done to girls and women.
